Cuban Sailing Adventure – Jardinas de la Reina – 2 Weeks
10th to 23rd March 2018
Steeped in history, from its first colonisation in the 1500’s to the Missile Crisis and Communist dominance of Fidel Castro, Cuba’s Southern coastline has more than it’s fair share of stories to tell. Our 2 week sail from Santiago to Cienfuegos explores deserted offshore islands as well as historic cities.
Have a Cuban Sailing Holiday Adventure
Fly into Santiago-de-Cuba and meet up with your shipmates at the nearby marina. Our sailing holiday along Cuba’s southern coastlines takes in the highlights of three of Cuba’s most historic colonial cities interspersed with some remote offshore islands complete with pristine snorkeling and flamingo flats. The City of Trinidad is a UNESCO World Heritage site as one of the oldest settlements in the New World, and Santiago de Cuba is second only to Havana in importance as the center of the Cuban rebellion which overthrew Spanish rule.
We will be doing a lot of sailing in this trip, with around 400 miles over the two weeks. Cuban waters are little fished and catching dinner will be high on Ibis’ agenda to supplement our larder! Fish, including dolphin fish (mahi-mahi), wahoo, blue and white marlin, sailfish, tarpon, barracuda, and bonito are plentiful; we’ll trawl our lines and there’s a good chance you’ll be able to land supper!
Our 14 day Cuban sailing adventure holiday includes glorious blue water sailing, great home-cooked food, fantastic snorkeling and evenings under the stars. Sailors looking to gain more experience sailing off the beaten track will enjoy the challenge of this little traveled coast, including practicing specific techniques for sailing in and out of the reefs. Single travelers will make firm friends among their fellow boat buddies.
Our itinerary takes in all the island highlights with time to enjoy starlit remote anchorages, local nightlife and SALSA!
Sunshine and Warm Seas
Warm sunny weather is practically guaranteed; there are often showers in this part of the world and the occasional cold front can bring strong gusts and squalls, but they never last long, and hey, it’s warm rain! Temperatures in their high 20′s are the norm, and there’s always a cooling breeze on board. The sea is a wonderful shade of blue, and with some of the best fishing in the Caribbean….you’ll have an amazing experience!

If you prefer not to use a travel agent, Flight Connections is a great starting point to find out about flights into HAV or SCU, Cuba’s international airports in Havana and Santiago. This link will help you identify which airlines connect from your nearest airport. Santiago is well served internationally with direct flights from Canada, Florida, Rome, Paris and Madrid, but there are many other cities that fly directly to Havana annd you may find it more convenient to get a return to Havana and arrange internal transport to Santiago by plane, train or bus – the latter are very slow.
At the end of your holiday you will need to connect back from Cienfuegos – CFG – which has direct connections with Florida, Montreal and Toronto. If you need to connect with a return from Havana or Santiago, you will need to source a bus or car, both of which are cheap and a great way to see a bit of the countryside away from the coasts.
Getting to the Boat
The airport in Santiago is about a 15 to 20 minute cab ride from the only Marina in Santiago; I’m unsure of the cost at the time of writing. Please ensure you provide your arrival information as soon as you can and keep us updated of any changes. Our boats will be in a marina and it is pretty small so you will be able to find us easily; more details will be notified to guests before they arrive. Please pack light, and using a lightweight, collapsible bag with wheels if possible. Hard suitcases may not be brought on board, we simply have no room to store them!
Arriving and Departing
You should aim to arrive around midday on the first day of your trip, and we will aim to finish at midday on the last. To facilitate travel, we offer a complimentary extra night on board at either the beginning or the end of the trip. Additional nights can be provided at a cost of USD $95 per person per night on a bed and help yourself continental breakfast basis. If you’d like to stay for any additional nights please add them to your booking. We do need the days in between trips to prepare the boats for the following trips, so please keep this in mind, thank you!
There are a number of accommodation options in both Santiago and Cienfuegos. A room in a local house – Casa Particular – is cheap, clean and a great way of getting to chat with locals. Please also check Tripadvisor and AirBnB for options.
Choosing a Boat
We will be running Bleu Turquoise for this trip with up to 8 guests; please make your cabin selection on the Booking Form.
|Boat Name||Cabin Type||Price (USD)|
|Bleu Turquoise||Double Cabin with Ensuite for Sole Use (3 available)||$2,895|
|Double Cabin with Ensuite for Couple (3 available)||$4,595|
You should ensure you have a good travel policy that covers you for flight delays and lost/delayed baggage – this is particularly important if any part of your travel includes a LIAT or Air France flight! During this sailing holiday we will never be more than 12 miles from shore and coastal sailing like this is usually part of the standard travel cover for most policies; please ensure that your travel policy doesn’t specifically exclude this.
Expenses & Currency
The currency in the Cuba is the Cuban CUC, which is on a par with the US dollar. Make sure you do have a supply of USD; the ATM’s are not as frequent a you might think especially once we leave for the islands! Credit cards are accepted in the occasional (government run) bar or restaurant but not many. When you arrive, you will need to change your dollars into the local CUCs.
We provide filtered drinking water on board and we carry fruit juices for breakfast time. You will need to provision with any soft drinks, alcohol and mixers you need when you arrive and there is a small supermarket at the marina where you can do this. Guests often club together and have a kitty for these costs, but you may prefer to buy your own.
You should budget for between $15 to $35 for a main course in a restaurant when we eat out plus drinks and service charge. Eating out in Cuba can be very cheap or quite expensive and you can pay as much for a bad meal as an excellent one. We promise to take you only where we’ve had good value for money!
Unless otherwise stated, sailing holidays with Yacht Ibis are participatory and you should expect to get involved. We don’t carry passengers! This will include:
- Preparing the boat for sailing
- Hoisting sails, pulling ropes, winching, steering and generally sailing the boat
- Putting all the ropes away at the end of the day
- Helping to keep the communal spaces tidy and clear of personal belongings
- Taking a turn on clearing away dishes after a meal
This is all part of living aboard a sailing boat 🙂
Hopefully any other questions you may have are covered in our frequently asked questions here or in our Pre-Arrival Booklet which can be downloaded here.
